The Voice YOU Want
The Vocal Coach Everyone Wants
Confusing your students not only won’t help them but if it ends up impacting their learning negatively, it may also be harmful to your career and damage your professional reputation.
Sounds pretty obvious right?
However, there are plenty out there who are easily impressed by just how clever someone can be. As teachers and coaches, confusing others in an attempt to impress never works.
Inspiration is one thing but being a smarty pants doesn’t help anyone.
If your students do well then so will your career as a voice specialist, obvious again right? Then how do we avoid the confusion with someone who may be coming to all this at an early stage?
Clarity is key.
The language used, terminology and references to other things and people can all be and mean different things to different people.
How do we know that a student is thinking of the same thing when we for example use terms like ‘dark, head, mix, operatic or belt.’ They may base their understanding on what someone else has said, how can we know what the understanding of that someone else is?
â–º End the confusion.
Confusion can easily spiral into a student’s doubts about their ability and even yours in having the expertise to teach them!
Rather than being perceived as complicated, being clear with your students will foster an environment of trust, understanding, and effective progression.
This surely starts with as mentioned above. Choosing to use the correct terminology. Anatomically speaking we’re all gifted with the same pieces of kit and they all have names, using them removes so much wasted time in explanations and discussions over ‘what we mean’. Spending minutes on getting this right now can save hours in the future.
More so this will lead to a much clearer understanding between you and your students when it comes to those words like ‘dark, head, mix, operatic or belt.’ How? Being clear on what it is we’re doing vocally will help to define how we perceive, categorise and achieve what we’re aiming for.
The course helped me to explore the voice in new ways and feel much more confident in understanding and teaching what is happening internally. I really enjoyed a week to experiment with my own voice and try voice qualities I never have before!

Is your teaching the problem? No!
Getting the tools and strategies to help the voices of others only works if you’re able to communicate successfully. They can only do what you ask if they understand your request.
Although comparing a sound or voice quality to a colour, smell or plant (yes that’s happened) might sound like a good idea, it invariably means different things to different people or nothing to many!
Let’s clarify your understanding of the voice. Organise the practical tools needed to guide your students in a clear and concise way towards their goal.
Being skilful in knowing how to share your knowledge with your students will not only help them, but build on your ever growing success in becoming the vocal coach everyone wants.
